Is there a way to solder a loose wiring to the carbon electrode (brush) of an electric motor from a tool or household appliance such as a drill, vacuum cleaner, washing machine, etc.? Of course there is!

«Soldering» by spraying

The «soldering» method is simple. I will not dwell on how to make a new brush. To begin with, the end of the wiring should be covered with tin (tinned) and inserted into the hole in the brush, and so that the wiring covers only part of the hole in the brush electrode (Fig. 1).

Next, using a clamp, we attach the brush to the handrail (podpyatnik) of the electric sharpener in such a way that the flow of flying sparks from the cutting circle falls directly into the hole of the electrode (Fig. 2). At the same time, it would be good to close with an insulating tape all those parts of the equipment on which the flow of sparks falls, leaving only the hole in the brush open.

Similar to the soldering method is simple. When processing a steel part on a whetstone, small red-hot steel particles fall into the hole in the electrode. There they «dig» into the solder and carbon of the electrode. Cooling down, the particles tightly interlock with each other, forming a strong «alloy». Of course, this «alloy» is not glue, but it holds the wiring in the brush securely enough.

So «soldered» with sparks
Fig. 2. So «solder» sparks:
1 — brush; 2 — prop; 3 — cutting stone (circle); 4 — steel billet.

It should be noted that a cutting circle (stone) is best suited for this procedure, since it is very durable and does not wear out for a long time. Simple grindstones are less durable and crumble quickly, so a lot of stone particles get into the «alloy», which reduces the strength and conductivity of the «alloy». However, it will take a little patience to do this work, because it will take from 15 to 20 minutes for such «gluing». This method of «soldering» by spraying is also used in a number of other cases. Good luck to you.
